Aphorisms, from MM N 38

English translation © Francesca M. Nichols

I do not paint from nature – I take from it –
or help myself from its bountiful platter.

I do not paint what I see – but what I saw. –

The camera cannot compete with the
brush and palette – so long as it cannot be used
in heaven or hell.

Art is the opposite of nature.

A work of art comes from the inner soul of a human being.

– Art is the picture’s form brought into being through
human nerves – heart – brain – eye.

– Art is the human craving for crystallisation.

Nature is the infinite realm from which art
takes it nourishment. –
